About the institute

ICAR-NINFET is carrying basic and applied researches related to post harvest processes of natural fibres such as Jute, Mesta, linseed/flax, sisal, ramie, banana, sunnhemp, pineapple leaf, dhaincha, coconut, yak hair, wool, silk and other lesser-known plant fibres.

Mandate
  • Basic, strategic and applied research on processing and quality assessment of natural fibres (except cotton) and their agro-residues.
  • Development of natural fibre-based value-added products and processing equipment/instruments.
  • Capacity Building and Entrepreneurship Development.
Aim
  • To uphold the importance of natural fibres in favour of farmers, trade and industry, academia and society as well as keeping in view of fast-changing global scenario towards green products.
Research Goal
  • To cater to the needs of farmers, prospective entrepreneurs, trade and industries through R&D of natural fibres processing and value addition.
Objectives
  • Basic and strategic research on extraction, characterization and processing of important natural fibres and their residual biomass, development of new products, equipment, machines, technologies and value addition.
  • To act as a knowledge repository of natural fibres.
  • Extensive dissemination of knowledge & technologies for the socio-economic improvement of farmers and other stakeholders.
  • Capacity building and entrepreneurship development.

To meet the objectives, the institute is executing basic and applied research on post-harvest technologies for various natural fibres such as Jute, Mesta, linseed/flax, sisal, ramie, banana, sunnhemp, hemp, pineapple leaf, yak hair, nettle, rabbit hair and other lesser-known plant fibres and has formulated multidisciplinary research programs in the following thematic areas.
